Democracy vs security: a tale of gain and loss

Politics & Society

In a powerful speech, Anastasia Tsoukala examines citizens’ troubled relationship with the police. With examples concerning the abuse of power by police officers, she attempts to make us think of what we would be prepared to sacrifice in return for our security.

She paints a gloomy picture of the dire consequences of an unchecked police force and highlights its systematic refusal to perform its duty, while transforming from an integral part of the justice mechanism to its dreadful enemy.

She argues that when institutions have failed, only citizens can provide the solution and asks whether we would be prepared to do something about it, while urging us to demand our constitutional right to live in a well-governed state.
