Efthymios Papatzikis

Scientist, Musician

Born in Thessaloniki, Efthymios is a musician that combines his love for both science and music, focusing on the mind, brain and music education fields.  Ηe has a special interest in educational psychology, neuroscience and music and has studied in leading educational and research institutions in Greece, Germany, Holland, France as well as the United Kingdom. His research portfolio is comprised of projects and publications relevant to Strings Pedagogy, Historical Musicology, Intercultural Music Awareness, Design of Music Courses, Instrumental Teaching Reflection, Music Psychology and Neuroscience.

In his home city of Thessaloniki, Efthymios is currently running the Musics R.E.D. Group, a scientific research center, staffed by researchers and associates of various areas of expertise, which aims to connect research and scientific activity to human nature and social action.

For more than 10 years he has been extensively exploring the field of music teaching and learning, working both as a professional teacher, lecturer and as a researcher. A current affiliate at the Institute of Education University of London, he has been appointed a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Harvard University, a Strings Tutor and Lecturer at the University of East Anglia in the UK and has received two professorships in major music conservatories in Greece. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in the UK, an active member of the Society for Education, Music and Psychology Research, as well as the International Society for Music Education and the European String Teachers Association. Recently, he has been appointed a Research Fellow in Music Education at the Botin Foundation, Spain.

Apart from his academic career, Efthymios has worked with major performers, conductors and teachers and he has performed as a soloist, orchestra leader and chamber music violinist all over Europe and North America, including concerts in major halls, venues and festivals such as The House of Lords and the Marlborough House in London, the Concert Halls in Athens and Thessaloniki and the Cathedral in Koln among others. Efthymios has participated in world renowned festivals, such as the Prades International Music Festival in France, the Salthouse Music Festival in the UK and the Summit Music Festival in New York.
