TEDxThessaloniki 2012: The Courage to Create/Το Θάρρος να Δημιουργείς

What does it mean to have courage, determination and faith? What does it take in order to create –against all odds– something exceptional in any field of action, whether this is the creation of an innovative economic theory, the writing of a popular novel following extensive research, the establishment of a novel public policy or the launching of a new business when the odds seem to be stacked against one? We will have the chance to listen to people who made it thanks to their unfailing dedication to their dream and the goal they pursued.

The reason we chose this topic is due to our conviction that in a time of great change, in which we are propelled towards a new way of thinking and acting, we need courage to move to the unknown, to create and form the new upcoming era. For all of us the courage to create is the courage to keep dreaming, believing and persevering even when it seems impossible. The foundation of any meaningful change, this courage is the very fabric of the formation of a better world.

TEDxThessaloniki 2011:Why Not?

650 people. 14 speakers. 10 performers. An inspiring day, where innovative and good ideas were heard across different fields. In volunteerism, a wheelchair athlete explained how he decided to think differently and start his own group to empower people with kinetic disabilities in an innovative way, while an activist in rural Greece decided to challenge the status quo and bring culture to youth across borders. An artist used online media to prove art can be a form of everyday communication, while a journalist proved how social media helped investigative journalism. An award winning scientist explained how his innovative technology could be used to make Thessaloniki a carbon-neutral city, while a designer made everyone look at materials in a completely different light and a digital media expert shared the innovation of humor, when a joke sparked a torrent of technological entrepreneurship. Two film producers presented their vision of future online documentary film-making, while an author challenged the audience to be what they imagine they can, and an educator blind-folded the audience to explain how a play with blind, non-actors changed her life and our perceptions. A farmer proved Greek soil can reward us, by innovating in his field and becoming the largest producer of a food supplement in Europe, while an activist challenged society to discover the talent of disadvantaged youth and not squander it. These and many more ideas, all innovative in their own field and the prevailing worldview within it, challenged and moved us all.
